A 16-year-old girl committed suicide as a result of school bullies in Bhisho, Eastern Cape. Lathitha Nako was ‘spiritually gifted,’ but her peers mistook her for a witch.

The disturbing incident was first reported on Facebook before going viral across the country. According to the report, the Bhisho high school grade 10 student found an escape from bullies by swallowing a pesticide and died on Wednesday in hospital.

A WhatsApp voice note, which is thought to have been recorded by the victim, has gone viral on social media. Nako is overheard discussing the horror of the witchcraft accusation she was facing at school with a friend.

She thus suggested taking her own life would be a solution. “I’ve been going through so much pain my friend. I can’t believe Avumile and them did this,” Nako is heard saying to her friend in the voice note.

“It is hard to be around people since this thing happened. I can’t even enjoy good moments now. I just suddenly remember this thing.

“I can’t believe she accused me of witchcraft. She knows I have a gift. I explained it to her. I said I have a gift that makes me do things I do not want to do.”

Nako also stated that one of her teachers believed the outrageous accusation that she was practising witchcraft on others. “People will believe them. There are three of them against me. I am tired of fighting now. I am leaving it all to God.”
