Mystery Surrounds Brown Mogotsi Shooting As Eyewitness Recounts Incident “He Got Out And Started Shooting”

Residents of Extension 25 in Vosloorus were left shaken on Monday night after a politically connected businessman, Brown Mogotsi, allegedly opened fire outside a row of homes in what appeared to be a terrifying late-night confrontation.

A local woman who witnessed the incident said she was at home with her partner when Mogotsi, driving a red car at high speed, suddenly stopped and began shooting. “He parked next to the houses facing the N3 highway, got out with a gun, and started firing,” she recalled. “My partner and I ran for cover — I was so scared I even left my shoes behind.”

The witness described the moment as chaotic and traumatising. “It all happened so fast. The car came to a halt, he spoke on his phone, and moments later there were gunshots.”

Confusion and Fear After Shooting

Residents who rushed to the scene minutes later found the red vehicle with shattered windows on both sides. The engine was off, the keys were still in the ignition, and the lights remained on. Mogotsi was nowhere to be seen, prompting fears he might have fled in another vehicle.

Shortly afterwards, a VW Golf arrived and stopped behind the red car. To their surprise, Mogotsi emerged from the Golf, telling those gathered that he had been followed from Spruitview BP garage by unknown men in a white bakkie.

“When we asked if we should call the police or ambulance, he refused,” said one resident. Another community member added that Mogotsi claimed he was en route to Dawn Park in Boksburg when the alleged chase occurred.

Despite the confusion, residents managed to summon local patrollers to secure the area until police arrived—nearly 90 minutes after the shots were fired.

Police Confirm Meeting with Brown Mogotsi

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that officers attended the scene on Monday night. “Mr Mogotsi told officers he was traumatised and would visit the station the following day to open a case,” Mathe said.

By Tuesday afternoon, Mogotsi had not yet appeared at the Vosloorus police station, but police later confirmed that he had since met investigators alongside his legal team.

“Yes, we can now confirm that the investigating team is meeting with Mr Mogotsi and his lawyers at his lawyers’ offices,” said Mathe on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident has reignited debate around safety and accountability involving high-profile individuals linked to political and legal circles. Mogotsi is a key figure in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption in South Africa’s justice system.
