Brown Mogotsi Retracts Shocking CIA Claims Against Mkhwanazi And King Misuzulu

Controversial North West businessman Oupa Brown Mogotsi has dramatically backtracked on his explosive claims that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Misuzulu kaZwelithini were agents of the CIA.

Mogotsi, who first made the allegations at the Madlanga Commission, conceded before Parliament’s SAPS Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town that he had no tangible evidence to support his claims.

“I did not provide any tangible evidence… I’ll bring information that must be corroborated,” Mogotsi said under questioning.

But under intense grilling from MPs — including Julius Malema and DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach — Mogotsi ultimately folded.

“I retract the statement on both General Mkhwanazi and King Misuzulu. I hereby apologise for casting aspersions,” he told the committee.

Brown Mogotsi Claims Based on “Unreliable Sources”

Mogotsi admitted the allegations stemmed from information allegedly given to him by a handler. He said the suspicions arose after a royal household member opened a case, but conceded the information could not be verified.

“It does not necessarily mean it came from me,” he said, suggesting it was a task assigned to him.

He also revealed that he once travelled to Kenya to meet a man named George — allegedly connected to CIA operations in Southern Africa — after being referred by the late former Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa. However, he admitted that no tangible proof was ever produced.

Crime Intelligence Links and Criminal Record Under Scrutiny

Mogotsi described himself as a long-time Crime Intelligence informant, claiming involvement since 1999 and becoming a contact agent in 2001.

However, MPs questioned his credibility, pointing to:

• A conviction for grievous bodily harm (GBH)
• A 2010 murder charge that was later dropped
• No formal qualifications

He said evidence of his intelligence work could be verified if his handler submitted documentation or if the matter was referred to the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence. He further claimed his handler had been shot six times in Johannesburg and had filed an affidavit detailing Mogotsi’s role.

Underworld Allegations and Political Fallout

EFF leader Julius Malema pressed Mogotsi on alleged funding from controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and raised the spectre of possible perjury.

Mogotsi testified that Matlala told him he was going to meet someone to resolve his problems before a July 2025 media briefing. Mogotsi followed him to Umhlanga but claimed he did not see who Matlala met. He later alleged Matlala told him the meeting was with Mkhwanazi.

He further criticised Mkhwanazi for not disclosing the alleged meeting publicly — but later withdrew that statement after admitting he had misquoted the commissioner’s remarks about never making peace with criminals.

The dramatic retraction comes as Parliament continues probing allegations of infiltration and corruption within SAPS, alongside parallel investigations into political interference and organised crime links.

For now, Mogotsi’s climbdown has raised serious questions about the credibility of his initial testimony — and whether further accountability, including possible perjury proceedings, may follow.
