Brown Mogotsi Branded A ‘Professional Liar’ During Cross-Examination

Controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi faced a tense round of questioning at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he was sharply accused of being a “professional liar”.

Mogotsi, who insists he works as a crime intelligence agent, has previously been accused of giving false testimony under oath.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson pressed him to acknowledge that lying was central to his alleged intelligence work, pointing to examples he himself included in submissions to the commission.

Accusations Intensify as Past Statements Resurface

Chaskalson confronted Mogotsi over a prior 252 application he made to authorise an undercover police trap, in which he claimed to be operating from the office of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

The advocate accused him directly of lying under oath before the commission.

“Your role as an agent essentially makes you a professional liar, you lie as your job,” Chaskalson said.

Mogotsi conceded that dishonesty formed part of his duties, but insisted it was governed by strict rules. “I may not have a comprehension as lying as a profession. As an agent, there are rules. You cannot just lie if you are not on a mission,” he argued.

The businessman is expected to face further interrogation when the commission resumes on Thursday, with his credibility and claims likely to remain under intense scrutiny.
