Brown Mogotsi Testimony Delayed, Set To Resume This Afternoon At Madlanga Commission

Alleged Crime Intelligence agent Brown Mogotsi will only continue his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm. The delay comes after discrepancies were identified in Mogotsi’s statement during Tuesday’s proceedings.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, meanwhile, met with corporate leaders in Sandton on Tuesday, urging South African companies to play a role in shaping a new economic trajectory for the country and the continent.

Mogotsi’s late start is being attributed to his need to review documents in the commission’s exhibit bundle that he has not yet fully consulted. He will be given additional time to work with his legal team before resuming testimony.

Madlanga Commission Testimony: Brown Mogotsi Struggles to Recall Details

During Tuesday’s hearing, Mogotsi appeared to struggle with remembering key details from his preprepared statement. When questioned about a message he sent to Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, Mogotsi could not recall the full identity of the individual referenced in the message.

The message involved a person allegedly awarded a R30 million contract with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson pressed Mogotsi for specifics:

“Sorry, but who is he?” Chaskalson asked.

“Oh, Joshias, his name was Joshias,” Mogotsi replied.

Chaskalson followed up, “Joshias, is that his first name, his surname?”

“I can’t remember his surname. We were just interacting, and he said he has a contract with SAPS for R30 million. The same applies to him; we ended up not meeting,” Mogotsi said.

The commission will provide Mogotsi with extra time in the morning to thoroughly review the evidence bundle and ensure he is fully prepared for the afternoon session at 2 pm.
