Brian Baloyi Heartbroken Over Itumeleng Khune’s Situation With Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi recently shared his feelings about the ongoing situation between Itumeleng Khune and Amakhosi management. The legendary keeper is deeply disappointed, saddened, and heartbroken over how things have unfolded.

Khune’s Situation With Amakhosi

Khune, who’s been a stalwart for the Chiefs, finds himself in a tough spot. The club wanted him to transition into a coaching and ambassadorial role after his contract ended last season.

However, Khune has expressed his desire to keep playing, even though his chances of securing another contract in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) seem slim, given his limited playtime in recent seasons.

Baloyi, who made way for Khune at Naturena, believes the situation could have been handled better by both parties. “Blame must not only go to the club but also to Khune’s team and himself,” he said.

Reflecting on Khune’s career, Baloyi noted, “In the past five to six years, he’s played less than 50 games. Imagine if he had put everything in his life on hold and focused on himself and his career. Six years is about 200 to 250 games, and he would be sitting on more than 600 games—no one was going to catch him in the PSL.”

He added, “This is a legacy he could have built for himself, but when he is by himself and reflecting, he will say, ‘You have done well but you could have done better.'”

The Challenges of Retirement

Baloyi also touched on the difficulties athletes face when transitioning from playing to retirement. “It is not an easy process to retire. Even people in corporate or government roles often face anxiety and depression when the time comes to retire,” he shared.

He mentioned that many sports professionals are not ready to retire when they have to, leading to further complications.

“I was lucky I made the decision on my own terms,” Baloyi said. “A lot of my brothers don’t get that chance.”
