Brazen Cash-In-Transit Robbery In Rustenburg: 15 Gunmen Torch Cash Van In Daring Afternoon Heist

Police have launched a manhunt following a bold cash-in-transit robbery in Old Geelhout Park, Rustenburg, on Monday afternoon.

The incident unfolded at about 16:40 on 16 February 2026, when heavily armed suspects targeted a security vehicle transporting cash along Kremetart Street.

According to police, a Toyota Fortuner travelling in the opposite direction allegedly slammed into the driver’s side door of the cash-in-transit vehicle, forcing it to a halt.

Moments later, a Toyota Hilux (Legend) double cab bakkie reportedly blocked the vehicle, trapping it in the road.

Approximately 15 armed suspects are said to have overpowered the security officers and ordered them to unlock the vehicle’s doors. The guards were removed from the van, dragged a short distance away and instructed to lie face down on the ground.

One armed guard was disarmed while the suspects accessed the vehicle and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Vehicles Torched as Gunshots Ring Out

After seizing the money, the suspects allegedly set both the cash-in-transit vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner alight. Several shots were fired during the incident, heightening tension in the residential area.

Despite the brazen nature of the attack, no injuries were reported. The suspects fled the scene and remain at large.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Ryno Naidoo, urged residents to report serious crimes without delay. He cautioned that suspects involved in such offences are dangerous and should not be confronted.
