Brakpan Police Sergeant Kills Wife, Injures Children Before Taking Own Life

A police sergeant from Brakpan in Johannesburg’s East Rand is at the centre of a devastating tragedy after allegedly shooting and killing his wife, wounding his children, and then taking his own life.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that the officer had recently been served with a protection order by his wife following ongoing domestic disputes. He had also been instructed to surrender his firearm at his station in Brakpan.

Fatal Attack Leaves Family Wounded

According to reports, the sergeant followed his wife, who had taken their children to her parents’ home for safety. There, he allegedly opened fire, killing her instantly.

During the shooting, his two children, his mother-in-law, and a helper were injured. The scene revealed the extent of the violence, with investigators recovering 15 cartridge cases, eight bullet fragments, a live round, and two two-litre bottles of petrol.

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said: “It is further alleged that when he realised that the police were on his trail, he turned the gun on himself. Killing himself.”

After fleeing the crime scene, the sergeant drove to Secunda, Mpumalanga, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities believe he ended his life when he realised police were closing in.

The shocking incident has left the community reeling and has reignited concerns about domestic violence and firearm misuse among members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
