The suspect, believed to be the woman’s boyfriend, is expected to appear in the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a murder charge.

The killing comes during South Africa’s annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. On Friday, acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia revealed that 11,564 murder cases were reported between April and September this year.

Police Share Safety Tips Amid Rise in Domestic Violence

As part of its domestic-violence awareness campaign, SAPS issued advice aimed at helping women protect themselves when trapped in abusive relationships.

Police urged women anticipating violence to avoid confrontations in rooms with a single entry point and to stay clear of areas where potential weapons are accessible.

They also advised:

“Keep money in a safe place for public transport and have a bag of clothes for yourself and your children, and keep that in a safe place.

“If you are planning to leave, leave when your partner is not around and take the children with you.”
