Both Pilots Confirmed Dead After Aircraft Found Missing In KwaZulu-Natal

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements has confirmed that the second aircraft missing in the province earlier this week has been located.

The discovery came after extensive search operations coordinated by the Aeronautical Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) and the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the tragic news, stating, “We received a report from the Aeronautical Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre and the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit indicating that they have found the second aircraft. Unfortunately, the pilot suffered fatal injuries.”

The aircraft was found just before 7:30AM on Thursday, 16 October 2025. The first missing aircraft had been located the previous day near Nottingham Road, with the pilot also confirmed dead. Both planes departed from Secunda Airport, with one en route to Margate Regional Airport.

Authorities Launch Investigation into Fatal Aircraft Incidents

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the department is working closely with aviation authorities and welcomed an investigation by the Accidents and Incidents Investigations Division.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of both pilots and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families. We pray that God gives them strength during this difficult time,” Duma said.

Despite challenging weather conditions that slowed earlier search operations, Duma highlighted the dedication of ARCC and SAPS rescue teams in successfully concluding the search.

Safety Measures and Infrastructure Plans in KwaZulu-Natal Aviation

The Road Traffic Inspectorate continues to manage traffic around Nottingham Road to ensure safe recovery operations. Authorities have urged motorists and bystanders to avoid disrupting the work of rescue teams.

Looking ahead, Duma reaffirmed the province’s commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure in line with the Economic Regulations for Transport Act.

“We continue to collaborate with partners such as the South African Civil Aviation Authority, Airports Company South Africa, and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs to improve safety standards across the province,” he added.
