Bosasa Whistle-blower Angelo Agrizzi Escapes Jail Time After Plea Deal In Corruption Case

Former Bosasa Chief Operations Officer Angelo Agrizzi has avoided serving jail time after reaching a plea agreement with the state — a major development in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to tackle corruption.

Agrizzi, who became a whistle-blower after exposing large-scale graft involving the controversial facilities management company Bosasa, faced sentencing at the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.

The court handed down a 10-year jail term for corruption. However, while Agrizzi was convicted on four separate counts — each carrying a 10-year sentence — the court ruled that the terms would run concurrently.

In a ruling that drew public attention, the High Court suspended Agrizzi’s 10-year sentence for five years under strict conditions. This means that as long as he complies with the terms set out by the court, Agrizzi will not serve time in prison.

The former Bosasa executive became one of the most prominent figures in South Africa’s corruption exposés, having provided key testimony before the Zondo Commission, which uncovered deep-rooted corruption within state institutions.
