Bonang Matheba Faces R7 Million Tax Drama As SARS Threatens To Seize Assets!

South Africa’s media queen Bonang Matheba is allegedly facing serious pressure from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) after the tax authority reportedly issued a final notice over more than R7 million in unpaid income tax.
According to reports, the taxman sent the warning on February 17, giving the star 10 business days to either pay the money or arrange a payment plan.
If the matter isn’t resolved? Yoh — things could get messy.

The notice allegedly warns that if the debt is ignored, the matter could escalate legally — and that’s where things get spicy.
Possible consequences mentioned include:
- A civil judgment being granted against Bonang
- The sheriff of the court attaching her assets
- Property or valuables potentially being sold to recover the money
HAYIBO! That’s serious pressure from the taxman.
However, the notice also reportedly gives the star several options if she disputes the claim.
She could:
- Apply to pay the debt in instalments
- Request a temporary suspension of the amount
- Lodge a formal tax dispute
So for now, it’s not necessarily a done deal.
When asked about the situation, Bonang’s publicist Jerry Deeuw kept things very guarded, saying that tax matters are confidential and should remain between the celebrity and SARS.
Even SARS refused to spill any details publicly.

A spokesperson explained that the Tax Administration Act prevents them from discussing any taxpayer’s private information — celebrity or not.

Now here’s where the story gets even more interesting.
Sources claim the issue may relate to an alleged failure to submit personal income tax returns for the 2025 financial year.
And according to tax law, failing to submit returns can trigger:
- Financial penalties
- Interest on outstanding tax
- Aggressive debt collection measures
But Bonang might not be alone in this situation.
SARS commissioner Edward Kieswetter previously warned that influencers and media personalities are under growing scrutiny as the digital economy explodes.
These days, influencers earn money through multiple streams, including:
- Brand endorsements
- Sponsored posts
- Event hosting
- Partnerships with major companies
And SARS says all of it must be declared.

Kieswetter has stressed that non-traditional income is still taxable, especially as more young South Africans build wealth through social media.
Why This Story Has Mzansi Talking
Bonang isn’t just any celebrity — she’s one of South Africa’s biggest entertainment icons.
Since her TV debut in 2002, she has built a massive empire that includes:
- Television hosting
- Global brand collaborations
- Business ventures
- A social media following of over 10 million fans
So naturally, when her name appears next to tax drama, the internet goes into overdrive.
And of course… social media has opinions.
Some fans believe it’s just a misunderstanding, while others say SARS is tightening the screws on wealthy influencers.
