Police have launched an investigation after an explosive device detonated inside a Woolworths Holdings Limited store at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre during the early hours of Thursday morning.

The blast triggered a major response from specialised SAPS units, including bomb disposal experts, after the device exploded inside the store at around 01:00. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported despite several staff members being inside at the time.

According to police, the incident caused damage to shelving and food products within the store.

SAPS Investigates Explosion Inside Menlyn Park Woolworths

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the store manager was alerted after personnel on duty informed him about the explosion.

“According to preliminary information, the store manager received a telephone call from personnel stationed at the store informing him of an explosion that occurred inside the premises at approximately 01:00. Emergency Response services were activated and responded immediately and cordoned off the scene.”

Van Dyk said an unknown explosive device allegedly detonated on one of the shelves inside the retail outlet.

“At the time of the incident, five packers were on duty inside the store. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

“Damage sustained was limited to food items and shelving inside the store.”

Bomb Disposal Unit And SAPS Specialists Search For Clues

Several specialised SAPS divisions responded to the shopping centre following the blast. These included the SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit, K9 Unit, Crime Scene Management teams and detectives.

Van Dyk said investigators immediately began processing the scene and collecting evidence linked to the incident.

“First responders immediately descended on the scene to secure the area and process the environment for clues.”

Police confirmed that a case linked to Section 27(1)(c) of the Explosives Act, Act 26 of 1956, has been opened for investigation.

Woolworths Confirms Menlyn Park Incident

Authorities are now working to determine both the source of the device and the motive behind the explosion. No arrests have been made at this stage.

“Police have launched a full investigation into the matter to determine the nature of the device and the motive behind the incident. No arrests have been made at this stage,” Van Dyk said.

Police have appealed to the public for assistance. “We appeal to anyone who might have information that can assist the police in their investigation to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS App. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.”

Woolworths confirmed the incident and said it was cooperating with authorities while gathering more information.

“Woolworths can confirm that an incident occurred at our Menlyn Park store, and we are working with officials to understand all the facts before we provide comment,” the retailer said.

“The safety of our people and our customers remains our first priority.”
