BMA Intercepts 500 Zimbabweans Attempting Illegal Exit From South Africa Via Botswana

As festive travel surged around Christmas Day, South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) intensified its operations along key border points, leading to the interception of hundreds of people attempting to cross unlawfully.

The BMA confirmed that approximately 500 Zimbabwean nationals were stopped while trying to exit South Africa illegally en route to Botswana, at a time when cross-border movement was at its seasonal peak.

BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato told SABC News that the group was intercepted near the Groblersbrug border post, where officials had increased monitoring to curb unlawful movement.

Festive Season Border Traffic Patterns Under Scrutiny

Masiapato highlighted contrasting traffic volumes at major border posts over the festive period. While the Lebombo port of entry between South Africa and Mozambique experienced a significant surge, Beitbridge — the main crossing into Zimbabwe — recorded lower-than-expected numbers.

“At Beitbridge, when we did 30,000 at Lebombo, they did only around 16,000. You can see that we actually doubled their number,” he said.

According to the commissioner, the reduced figures at Beitbridge reflect the impact of strengthened enforcement measures aimed at tackling illegal migration along South Africa’s northern border.

Shift in Illegal Migration Routes Towards Botswana

Masiapato said these intensified controls have led to a noticeable change in migration patterns, with more people attempting to use western routes into Botswana to bypass formal border processes.

“When you look at the kind of measures that we put around our northern border around Beitbridge itself, particularly around illegal migration, we have started seeing the people having drifted into our western border with Botswana,” he said.

He added that recent interceptions demonstrate this shift. “For instance, just in the past two days, we have been able to intercept over 500 Zimbabweans that were trying to cross into Botswana around Groblers’ Bridge port of entry illegally.

“All of those people were intercepted and we had to make sure that we bring them back to the port and we process them out for deportation.”

BMA Responds With Proactive Deployment

The commissioner said authorities anticipated the change in movement and responded by deploying additional resources along alternative border points.

“So there is a shift out of Beitbridge into Groblers’ Bridge and other ports into Botswana and that is an attempt to at least subvert the processes. So we are aware of that and that is why we proactively deployed even that side to be able to deal with that situation,” he said.

The BMA continues to monitor cross-border movement closely as holiday travel remains high and enforcement efforts intensify.
