Bloemfontein Man Sentenced To Life For Raping His Own Mother

A 34-year-old man, Lebogang Kolokotoane, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Bloemfontein Sexual Offences Court for raping his 56-year-old mother and for a separate rape and robbery committed in 2015.

DNA Evidence Links Kolokotoane to Two Separate Crimes

According to court records, the horrifying incident occurred in June 2023, when the victim, who is the accused’s biological mother, was asleep at home. She awoke to find her son undressing and raping her. The woman managed to escape and sought help from a neighbour, who assisted her in alerting the police.

Subsequent DNA testing confirmed that Kolokotoane was the perpetrator. The same forensic report also linked him to a cold case from April 2015, in which a woman was attacked by three unknown men while walking home.

The assailants robbed her of her cellphone, a pair of Adidas sneakers, and R400 in cash, before two of them— including Kolokotoane — raped her. At the time, the victim could not identify her attackers, and the case went unsolved until the 2023 DNA match.

Sentencing and Court Findings

Following the new forensic evidence, Kolokotoane faced multiple charges of rape and robbery. On 21 October 2025, the court sentenced him as follows:

  • Rape (of his mother): Life imprisonment
  • Rape (2015 victim): Life imprisonment
  • Robbery: 15 years’ imprisonment

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, resulting in an effective term of life imprisonment.

Prosecutor: “This Man Poses a Grave Danger to Society”

During sentencing, Regional Court Prosecutor Mpho Motloung urged the court to impose the maximum penalty, stating that Kolokotoane posed a serious threat to society.

Motloung emphasised that the offender not only violated and traumatised his own mother but also harmed another woman years earlier, demonstrating a pattern of violent, predatory behaviour.

“Such punishment is the only fitting response to his heinous and deplorable crimes,” Motloung told the court.

The NPA praised the diligent efforts of prosecutors and investigators in securing the conviction, reaffirming its commitment to protecting victims of sexual violence and ensuring justice.

“All cases of sexual violence infringe upon the rights to dignity and privacy of victims as enshrined in the Constitution,” the statement read. “The NPA will continue to prosecute such offences vigorously to uphold justice and safeguard the most vulnerable in our communities.”
