Bizarre Ballistic Irregularities Exposed In Armand Swart Murder Case At Madlanga Commission

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has heard startling revelations about “bizarre” irregularities in the ballistic examinations connected to the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

The revelations came from Captain Solomon Modisane, a senior forensic analyst with the South African Police Service (SAPS), who is currently testifying before the commission.

Swart was murdered in 2024 in what investigators described as a case of mistaken identity after his company uncovered irregularities in a Transnet tender process.

According to Modisane, the firearms linked to Swart’s murder were tested at two separate forensic laboratories — one in Pretoria and another in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.

Expert Flags “Highly Irregular” Procedures in SAPS Investigation

Modisane described the decision to conduct ballistic tests in two different provinces as highly irregular, noting that such duplication is not standard police procedure.

“I spoke to Warrant Officer Cadre about this case because, for me, it was bizarre why this case was examined in Pretoria and again in KZN,” he told the commission. “He advised me that the investigating officers requested that the firearms be examined in Amanzimtoti by an independent analyst.”

The commission is continuing to hear testimony regarding the investigation’s handling as questions mount over potential procedural lapses and interference.
