Bheki Cele Says He Fears For His Life Without State Security

Former police minister Bheki Cele has expressed concerns regarding his personal safety now that a state security team no longer protects him.
Speaking during an interview with Vuma FM, Cele revealed the reality he faces after stepping down from his position following the ANC’s poor electoral performance on May 29. He described feeling vulnerable, particularly in the context of Cape Town’s gangsters whom he once played a crucial role in apprehending.
Cele On Facing Past Enemies
According to Cele, he made many enemies by arresting significant figures involved in crime during his tenure. He recalled, “There are top guys I took down who were still attending their cases when I was a police minister.”
He said acknowledging his past actions adds a layer of urgency to his fears, as he understands that the absence of state protection leaves him susceptible to retaliation.

Cele also made a remark about accepting the reality of being an ordinary citizen, emphasising that he is now aware of the potential threats that come with that status. “It’s just that after all, you have to accept that you are a normal human being and anything can happen.”
The Reality of Ministerial Perks
In addition to discussing his own fears, Cele issued a warning to current ministers, urging them to prepare for a swift loss of their privileges once they leave office. He noted, “Right now, I’m driving by myself in my own skorokoro car (a term used to describe a old car). It is no longer the same.”
