Former Police Minister Bheki Cele has shaken Mzansi with a jaw-dropping claim — saying that police believed Anele Tembe was murdered after investigating her 2021 death.

Cele, who appeared before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee this week, told members that the South African Police Service (SAPS) had completed their investigation and were convinced Anele didn’t die by suicide — but was killed.

“I’m sure you’ll hear one day that there is an inquest in the death of Moses Tembe’s daughter,” Cele said. “Police did the investigation, and they believed that daughter was murdered.”

According to Cele, the police kept pushing prosecutors to take the case forward, but it kept being delayed.

“They went time and again to the prosecutor… until they said, ‘if you can’t do it, give us a certificate.’ I went to the president and said: ‘Mr President, your minister of police is going to do something funny — is going to support a private prosecution — and the prosecutor refused to give the certificate,’” Cele revealed.
“So we are stuck in the middle. But now, the magistrate is asking, ‘why was this thing not enrolled? It’s an obvious case.’”

The Tragic Love Story That Shook South Africa

Anele “Nelli” Tembe was just 22 years old when she fell from the 10th-floor balcony of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town on April 11, 2021.

At the time, she was engaged to rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, one of the biggest names in South African hip-hop. The pair’s whirlwind romance had played out publicly, often drawing attention for its passionate highs and explosive lows.

AKA was in the hotel room with Anele when the tragedy occurred. Her death left South Africa divided — with many questioning whether it was truly an accident, suicide, or something more sinister.
