Bheki Cele Accuses Senzo Mchunu Of Plotting His Arrest for Corruption

Former Police Minister Bheki Cele has made explosive claims against Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, accusing him of being part of a plot to have him arrested for corruption.

Cele made the allegations during his first appearance before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

According to Cele, Mchunu, along with Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, conspired to have both him and Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo arrested. The former minister stated that Matlala had confided in him about the alleged scheme, which dates back to a tender awarded more than 15 years ago.

“Matlala tells me that Mchunu is preparing to arrest me for having got into corruption for the 2010 tender. Here is the evidence,” Cele testified. When asked about the matter by evidence leader Norman Arendse, Cele remarked, “He can answer that best.”

Cele Slams Disbanding of Political Killings Task Team

Cele also took issue with Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team, which was established to tackle politically motivated murders in KwaZulu-Natal.

He argued that the move should have been discussed with both the inter-ministerial task team and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola before being implemented.

The former minister further suggested that Mchunu’s actions were politically motivated, echoing Matlala’s claims that the police’s procurement systems were allegedly being used to fund Mchunu’s African National Congress (ANC) campaign.

Cele’s testimony marks the beginning of what is expected to be a tense series of hearings as the ad hoc committee continues to probe allegations of corruption and political interference within the police ranks.
