Bergview Rape Case: Police Minister Assures Public of Thorough Investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reassured the public that it is handling the rape case of a 7-year-old girl at Bergview College in the Eastern Cape with the utmost seriousness and priority.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has confirmed that three individuals, including the school principal of Bergview, have been identified as suspects and that DNA tests have been conducted

Bergview Rape Investigation Ongoing

The SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is handling the investigation, which is ongoing.

The police are working closely with social workers and victim support organizations to ensure that the family receives comprehensive assistance.

The police have urged the public to remain calm and to allow the investigation to follow due process.

Actions By Education Board

On Friday, Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said she was made aware of the matter concerning the 7 year old at Bergview college and has communicated with the Eastern Cape Education Department.

Spokesperson for the Provincial Commissioner Eastern Cape SAPS, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, said that the incident was reported to Matatiele SAPS on 16 October 2024.

Police Minister Mchunu has assured the public that justice will be served in the case.

“The SAPS is working diligently to ensure that justice is served and those responsible are held accountable.

“The police are committed to ensuring that the investigation is thorough and that the perpetrators are brought to book.
