Bergview College Fights To Stop  Deregistration Amid Rape Scandal

Bergview College has filed an urgent court application to prevent the Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade, from revoking its registration.

The legal application filed by Bergview, comes after a seven-year-old learner, Cwecwe, was allegedly raped on school grounds in October 2024, last year.

The incident at the Bergview college has sparked widespread outrage and concerns about child safety in the community.

Legal Action And Procedural Disputes

The trustees of the Wizkid Trust, which operates Bergview College, claim that the deregistration process did not follow the stipulations set out in the Schools Act.

They argue that Sections 44 and 45, which govern the registration and deregistration of independent schools which Bergview is one of, were not adhered to.

The Bergview school’s management is seeking immediate intervention to contest the ruling effectively.

Investigation And Protests

The provincial Department of Education has expressed concerns about the ongoing investigation into the rape case, citing the alleged non-cooperation of the school’s principal.

Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu has confirmed that three suspects have been identified, including the school’s principal, and DNA samples have been collected.

The incident has sparked protests across South Africa, with citizens calling for justice for Cwecwe and stricter measures to protect children in schools.
