Berea Bloodshed: Suspect Shot Dead After Attempting To Rob Police Officer

A man in his twenties has been shot and killed after allegedly attempting to rob a member of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal. The incident unfolded on Botanic Gardens Road in the Berea area on Wednesday morning, sparking a heavy police and security response.

Paramedics Declare Berea Man Dead at Scene

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after 7:30am.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find Saps and multiple security personnel in attendance and were shown to a male believed to be in his twenties who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head.”

Jamieson said paramedics assessed the man, but he had suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

“It is alleged that the man attacked a Saps official who retaliated. However, all necessary authorities were in attendance and will be investigating further.”

Two Arrested Over Eldorado Park Mass Shooting

In a separate development, police have arrested two suspects linked to a deadly mass shooting in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.

The suspects, aged 23, were tracked down by the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit and now face two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed the arrests, saying:

“Saps Crime Intelligence, together with Eldorado Park Police, as well as Anti-Gang Unit Visible Policing and Detectives, immediately started tracing the perpetrators following the shooting incident.

“The first suspect handed himself in at Eldorado Park Police Station with his lawyer, while the second one was arrested at his residence in Eldorado Park.”

The pair are expected to appear before the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.

The mass shooting is believed to have taken place during a social gathering, where a group of about eight armed men allegedly entered a yard and opened fire randomly before fleeing on foot.

Police have confirmed that more suspects are still being sought as investigations continue.
