Bela-Bela Police Launch Manhunt After Prisoner Escapes From Court

The Bela-Bela police in the Waterberg District of Limpopo are currently on a manhunt for an awaiting-trial prisoner, Jimmy Chauke, who managed to escape from lawful custody.

Chauke, 31, made his daring escape from the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, February 7, at approximately 8:05 a.m.

According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the Limpopo police spokesperson, Chauke had been arrested in connection with two cases of burglary in the Bela-Bela area in March and December 2023.

The circumstances surrounding Chauke’s escape are currently under investigation. Initial reports suggest that he was brought to court from a holding cell to consult with his legal representative. A case of escape from lawful custody has been opened for further investigation.

In response to the incident, Major General Jan Scheepers, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, has strongly condemned Chauke’s escape and called for his immediate re-arrest.
