Bayanda Walaza Withdraws From World Athletics Championships Due To Injury

Athletics South Africa (ASA) has confirmed that sprinter Bayanda Walaza will not compete at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, set for 13–21 September.

Walaza, who was expected to run in the 100m heats on Saturday, picked up a hamstring injury during the Diamond League final in Zurich last month.

Hamstring Injury Ends Bayanda Walaza Tokyo Hopes

In a statement, ASA explained: “Following a comprehensive medical evaluation, ASA has determined that Walaza’s hamstring injury, sustained during his race at the Diamond League Final in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, 25 August 2025, will prevent him from participating in the Championships.

“The decision has been communicated to the athlete, his coach, and his management. This decision was made in the best interest of the athlete and the integrity of the National Team.”

The Paris Olympic Games silver medalist and world under-20 champion will now be replaced by Retshidisitswe Mlenga in the men’s 100 metres event.
