Another Weekend Behind Bars: Fannie Nkosi’s Bail Bid Delayed As Court Questions Hospital Detention

Suspended Organised Crime Unit sergeant Fannie Nkosi will remain in custody for at least another week after his bail application was postponed in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.

The matter was delayed to 20 April due to the unavailability of the state prosecutor, halting proceedings shortly after the application began on Monday.

During the hearing, the presiding magistrate also raised concerns about Nkosi being held at the Kgosi Mampuru Hospital Wing.

Fannie Nkosi Offers R10,000 Bail, Denies All Charges

Nkosi, who is facing charges of defeating the ends of justice, theft, possession of unlicensed ammunition, and possession of stun grenades, proposed bail of R10,000.

His legal team proceeded by affidavit, in which he indicated that he intends to plead not guilty and described the case against him as weak and unfounded.

In his statement, Nkosi outlined his personal circumstances, telling the court he is a South African citizen, married with one child, and employed with a monthly income of R16,500.

He further stated that he has a mortgage bond of R1.5 million on a property in Pretoria North, with monthly repayments of R7,500.

Fannie Nkosi Rejects Allegations, Says He Is Not a Flight Risk

Nkosi denied allegations relating to firearms and ammunition, stating that all firearms found at his residence were licensed and stored in a safe in accordance with the law.

He also rejected claims that he interfered with the course of justice, saying he complied fully with the conditions of his suspension and was never instructed to return issued ammunition.

Nkosi told the court that he has no previous convictions or pending cases and undertook not to interfere with witnesses, whom he believes are police officers.

He further stated that he has no intention of leaving the country and is not a flight risk. Nkosi added that he is willing to adhere to any bail conditions imposed, including surrendering his travel documents.

The case was adjourned and will resume on 20 April.
