Advocate Baloyi Challenges Muzi Sibiya’s Alibi In Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial

The cross-examination of Muzi Sibiya, the first accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, is set to continue on Thursday morning at the High Court in Pretoria.

Sibiya, who stands trial alongside four co-accused for the murder of the former Bafana Bafana captain, maintains that he was living in KwaZulu-Natal in 2014 — the same year Meyiwa was gunned down.

However, the state disputes this claim, presenting evidence that appears to contradict his version of events.

Banking Records Place Sibiya in Gauteng

Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi told the court that financial transactions linked to several accounts registered under Sibiya’s name show multiple withdrawals made in Gauteng throughout 2014.

Sibiya argued that the bank cards in question were in the possession of his child’s mother, Mbali Moyo, at the time.

Baloyi then pointed to a specific transaction that he said could only have been completed by the account holder.

“On 29th September 2014, there’s a branch card replacement fee of R40, so that means it could only have been you, Mr Sibiya, that could ask for a card replacement,” said Baloyi.

Sibiya responded, “It’s possible that I’m the one who had changed the card if it happened on that day. If I remember correctly, I think this card I opened in Lesedi.”

Baloyi pressed further, asking, “Is that Vosloorus?” to which Sibiya replied, “Yes.”

Baloyi concluded, “So that means that on the 29th of September 2014, you were in Gauteng, on your own version.”

The revelation appears to cast further doubt on Sibiya’s alibi, with the state determined to prove his presence in Gauteng at the time of Meyiwa’s killing.

The high-profile trial continues to unfold amid public scrutiny and growing calls for justice for the slain soccer star.
