Bakery Driver And Crew Arrested For Faking Robbery And Hijacking In Limpopo

A bakery delivery driver and his crew have been arrested for staging a hijacking and armed robbery in Ga-Matipane village, Limpopo. Police confirmed the incident, initially reported as a violent attack, was fabricated to cover up a planned crime involving five individuals.

Staged Robbery Unravels After Investigation

The incident occurred on 31 March 2025 at around 14:30 in the Senakwe area, under the Mokwakwaila policing precinct in the Mopani District. According to the initial police report, the bakery driver and his assistant claimed they were ambushed by three armed men while delivering bread to local shops.

They alleged the suspects forced them to drive to a remote bushy area where they were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash from a safe inside the vehicle, along with two cellphones, before fleeing on foot.

Police opened cases of armed robbery and vehicle hijacking, and a dedicated investigation team from Mopani District Tracking Team and Mokwakwaila Detectives was immediately deployed.

Truth Emerges Leading To Driver’s Arrest

After thorough investigative work, police discovered inconsistencies in the victims’ statements. On 04 April 2025, police recovered the so-called stolen cellphones at the suspects’ residence in the Bolobedu policing area.

The evidence confirmed suspicions that the incident was an orchestrated robbery, planned and executed by the driver, his crew, and three other accomplices. The two suspects, aged 32 and 37, were arrested and face charges of perjury, armed robbery, and carjacking. They are set to appear in the respective Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 07 April 2025.

Police Condemn Abuse of Resources

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe strongly condemned the false report and deception, calling it a serious setback in the fight against real crime.

“This deceitful act not only diverted critical police resources from genuine cases, but it also undermines the fight against crime in our communities. We will not tolerate such criminal behaviour, and those who manipulate the justice system for personal gain will face the full might of the law,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

Police are still tracking the remaining three suspects linked to the staged crime. Authorities are appealing to the public to assist by providing any relevant information.
