Bahumi Mhlongo Reveals Celebrity Bias In Casting: “Sometimes Fame Matters More Than Talent”

Award-winning actress Bahumi Mhlongo has pulled back the curtain on a topic Hollywood and local productions rarely discuss: celebrity bias in casting. “Sometimes, people are picked for major roles simply because they have a strong social media presence,” she admitted.

“But there’s also the other side, where someone happens to be famous but is also genuinely talented. I can relate to that to some extent, because there were people who wouldn’t choose me for certain roles.”

Bahumi Mhlongo Tells The Lebo Mathosa Audition Drama

Bahumi shared the behind-the-scenes story of landing the role of the iconic Lebo Mathosa. The producers reportedly had a very clear vision: the younger Lebo had to represent an “everyday person,” which led to an open audition process.

“It was a huge toss-up between me and others who weren’t famous. The producers wanted the younger Lebo Mathosa to represent the everyday person, which is why they made the auditions open to the public. The older Lebo Mathosa, however, would be someone the audience already loved,” she explained.

Her honesty highlights the fine line actors navigate between fame and opportunity, offering a rare glimpse into casting realities.
