Bafana Bafana Will Play Mexico In 2026 Fifa World Cup Opening Match

South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, finally have clarity on their 2026 Fifa World Cup journey after being placed in Group A during the Final Draw held at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC on Friday evening.

The moment marked an important milestone for coach Hugo Broos and his team as they prepare for the global tournament.

The draw confirmed that South Africa will kick off their campaign with a high-profile opening match against Mexico, with further group-stage fixtures set to follow against Korea and a yet-to-be-determined European qualifier. The identity of the final opponent will be finalised in March 2026.

Fifa will announce the full schedule and match venues on Saturday, giving participating nations a clearer roadmap for the expanded 48-team tournament.

How the 2026 World Cup Draw Was Structured

Ahead of the draw, FIFA divided 48 teams into four pots of 12, guided mainly by world rankings. Hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States were seeded into Groups A, B, and D, alongside world football heavyweights such as Spain, Argentina, France, and Brazil.

The highest-ranked sides, including Spain, Argentina, France, and England, enjoyed protected status to help prevent early-round clashes, provided they top their groups.

Under the new competition format, the top two teams in each group will progress to the round of 32, joined by the eight best third-placed finishers. This edition marks the first time the World Cup will feature 48 teams, creating more opportunities for emerging football nations to shine on the global stage.

They were joined by representatives from the other African nations heading to the 2026 World Cup: Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Cape Verde.
