Bafana Bafana Ends Afcon Qualifiers With Bang, Crushing South Sudan In Cape Town
Our Bafana Bafana boys have done it again! Under the brilliant guidance of coach Hugo Broos, they’ve wrapped up their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers in style, giving us a taste of the magic that might come in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers kicking off early next year.
Unstoppable Bafana
Tuesday night at a sold-out, buzzing Cape Town Stadium, Bafana Bafana dominated South Sudan with a confident 3-0 win. The goals came from Iqraam Rayners in the 8th minute, Patrick Maswanganyi in the 22nd minute, and Teboho Mokoena with a 50th-minute penalty.

The team showed off their confidence, style, and superb organisation—traits that had been missing for two decades but have now become the norm under Broos.
This win marks Bafana’s ninth victory this year. They finished at the top of Group K with 14 points, setting them up nicely to be one of the seeded teams for the 24-team Afcon finals in Morocco.
Broos made some strategic changes, bringing in Maswanganyi, Thapelo Morena, Rayners, Fawaaz Basadien, and Siyabonga Ngezana, which paid off handsomely.

The positive vibe at the stadium soared when Rayners, one of the many Cape Town-born players, opened the scoring with a beauty of a goal after a fantastic run and cross by Oswin Appollis. Rayners netted his second goal of the qualifiers, while Maswanganyi, pegged as the future playmaker, coolly doubled the lead with a brilliant dribble past the keeper. Mokoena sealed the deal with a penalty six minutes into the second half.
Team Effort
Bafana’s tally of 16 goals in the qualifiers with only five conceded is impressive. Mokoena ended as the team’s top scorer with three goals. Broos will be delighted with the contributions from players like Lyle Foster, Elias Mokwana, Bathusi Aubaas, and Thalente Mbatha, who stepped up at crucial moments.

Securing a spot in the 2025 Afcon finals so convincingly is a huge morale boost ahead of the World Cup qualifiers next year. Bafana shares the top spot in Group C with Rwanda and Benin, making the upcoming matches even more exciting.
Broos is now the longest-serving Bafana coach and will make history by leading the team in back-to-back Afcon tournaments. For his exceptional work, he’s been nominated for Caf’s Coach of the Year. Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams also hit a milestone, earning his 50th cap a decade after his debut against Brazil.
