Bafana Bafana Beats Uganda In Afcon Qualifier

Bafana Bafana did the job and beat Uganda 2-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group K qualifier at Mandela National Stadium on Friday. It was a bit of an anti-climactic clash, but we’ll take the win!
Slow Start, But Bafana Bafana Finds Their Stride
The first half was pretty uneventful with no shots on target from either side. But things picked up in the second half when Bafana finally got their first shot on target, and boom, Thapelo Morena was there to slap the ball into the net after Uganda’s defensive blunder. That put us in the lead!

Just before full-time, Patrick Maswanganyi made a great turn in the Uganda box and fired off a powerful shot to double our lead. Both South Africa and Uganda had already qualified for Afcon thanks to Thursday’s game where South Sudan beat Congo 3-2, ending Congo’s hopes of making it to the tournament in Morocco next year.
With this win, South Africa is now top of Group K with 11 points. We can secure a better seeding at Afcon if we win our final qualifier against South Sudan on Tuesday in Cape Town.
Coach Hugo Broos’s Confidence
Earlier this week, Bafana coach Hugo Broos was so confident about qualifying for Afcon that he said he’d resign if we didn’t make it with two matches left. “It would be a little shame if we don’t qualify for Afcon,” Broos said. “Honestly, we have the quality, we are bronze medalists.”
He even joked about taking a flight back to Belgium if we lost both games. But no worries, Coach – we’re on track!
