Western Cape Start Program To Boost Academic Performance And Reverse Pandemic-Induced Learning Losses

The Western Cape Government’s BackOnTrack project aims to undo the educational failures created by the COVID-19 epidemic. The program’s extra Saturday classes began on February 15, 2025, at Thembani Primary School in Langa, marking an important step towards improving learners’ academic performance.

BackOnTrack Saturday Classes

The BackOnTrack program began with excitement among students who attended extra classes on a Saturday, a day traditionally allocated for relaxation. “During our visit to Thembani Primary School, we were pleased to hear learners say how these classes help them achieve their aspirations and improve their academic skills”, said Minister David Maynier, Minister of Education, Western Cape in the released statement.

These Saturday classes include 15,450 Grade 4 and Grade 7 students from 223 primary schools. The curriculum focuses mostly on Mathematics and Languages, which are thought crucial for basic learning. These lessons are led by expert tutors who attempt to strengthen important concepts and promote a better grasp of the material being taught.

Early academic struggles can have a long-term impact on a student’s educational path. As a result, the BackOnTrack initiative aims to reverse learning losses and give students with a solid foundation in these critical disciplines.

The project recognises that falling behind early on might jeopardise learners’ future educational and career possibilities. The Western Cape Government hopes to guarantee that all children have access to a high-quality education by investing in additional support during their early years.

Support for Grade 12 Students

In addition to assisting younger learners, the #BackOnTrack program serves around 8,000 Grade 12 students preparing for their matric exams. These learners will benefit from Saturday classes as well as revision camps throughout the school holidays of autumn, winter, and spring. This two-step approach attempts to maximise their preparation for one of the most important exams in their academic careers.

Professional Development for Teachers

Recognising that good teaching is critical to student success, the #BackOnTrack program offers professional development opportunities for educators. 2,483 teachers from grades 1–11 will get in-person training in Mathematics and Languages. Online training is also offered for all teachers teaching Grade 8 languages and a variety of subjects in Grades 10 and 12.

This comprehensive training method intends to provide teachers with novel pedagogical techniques that will improve classroom engagement and learning results.

Positive impact on learning outcomes

Researchers from Stellenbosch University’s Research on Socio-Economic Policy (RESEP) group recently published a paper highlighting the #BackOnTrack program’s success in minimising pandemic-induced learning difficulties. The results showed unexpectedly large effect sizes, indicating considerable gains in learners relative to typical educational methods.

This positive trend is evident in the annual systemic test results for 2024, where selected grades and subjects surpassed scores from 2019 for the first time since the pandemic began.
