Ayanda Dludla Back In Court For Bail Hearing After Deadly School Transport Crash

A 22-year-old scholar transport driver accused of causing a crash that killed 14 learners is expected back in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Wednesday as his bail application continues.

Ayanda Dludla was arrested earlier this year after the fatal collision involving the vehicle he was driving and a side-tipper truck. The incident, which claimed the lives of schoolchildren, sparked widespread shock across the country.

According to allegations, Dludla attempted to overtake unlawfully before the vehicle collided head-on with the truck. He now faces 14 counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of reckless and negligent driving.

Dludla’s case has drawn intense public and media attention since his first court appearance, where a large crowd gathered following the tragic loss of young lives.

During his second appearance, his legal team told the court that he was remorseful following the incident. The State, however, requested a postponement to allow the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to finalise charges due to the seriousness of the matter.

The charges fall under Schedule 5 and 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act, meaning Dludla must present compelling reasons to be granted bail.

Ayanda Dludla Faces Allegations Of Reckless Driving And Overloading

Although not yet formally presented in court, viral dashcam footage allegedly shows Dludla overtaking multiple vehicles shortly before the crash.

There are also claims that the vehicle he was driving was overloaded at the time of the collision, raising further concerns about its roadworthiness.

The court is expected to hear further arguments as proceedings resume.
