ATM Card Thief Arrested After Dramatic Chase

A 36-year-old man was arrested in KwaMashu, KZN, after stealing the bank card of an elderly male at a busy ATM in Phoenix on Thursday.
The suspect distracted the elderly man while he was using the ATM at Cash & Carry, making off with the victim’s Capitec bank card.

Dramatic Pursuit And Shootout
After the theft, the suspect attempted to flee in a silver VW Polo.
Officers from Lion Security stationed at the Cash & Carry attempted to stop him, but the suspect tried to run them over.

In response, the officers fired at his vehicle as he sped off towards KwaMashu.
The suspect’s vehicle was later found on Malendela Road in KwaMashu, where he was repairing a damaged tyre caused by the shooting.
Arrest
Upon spotting Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers, the suspect fled on foot.

A lengthy chase through railway lines ensued, culminating in his arrest.
The stolen bank card was recovered from his possession.

As officers awaited the South African Police Service (SAPS), a crowd of 80 locals threatened to attack the suspect.
He was handed over to the police for further processing.
