Atlantis Police Officer Convict Awaits Sentence For The Murder Of Sister-In-Law

An Atlantis police officer convicted of murdering his sister-in-law and injuring nine others at a children’s party in 2018 is set to learn his fate this week.

Constable Bonani Nkonzo was found guilty of murder, along with multiple counts of attempted murder, after a violent shooting spree at his home.

Deadly Outburst at a Family Gathering

According to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Phaladi Suping, the tragic incident unfolded on October 28, 2018, when Nkonzo returned home and engaged in a heated argument with his wife.

“In a fit of rage, he retrieved his service firearm and began shooting indiscriminately while moving from room to room,” Suping stated.

His wife’s sister was fatally shot, while nine others sustained injuries, including a nine-year-old child. Among the victims was Nkonzo’s own wife, who was shot in the head but survived the ordeal.

Police Immediate Response and Investigation

Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, and Nkonzo was arrested on the same day. The IPID launched an investigation, gathering evidence and witness testimonies that led to his conviction on one count of murder and nine counts of attempted murder.

Following an extensive trial, Nkonzo was found guilty of all charges. He now awaits sentencing in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday, where the court will determine his punishment for the brutal attack.
