Aston Villa Stun Man City With 1-0 Win, Ending Pep Guardiola’s Side’s Unbeaten Run

Manchester City’s unbeaten streak came to a dramatic end on Sunday as Aston Villa claimed a 1-0 home victory, thanks to Matty Cash’s decisive first-half strike in their Premier League clash.

The defeat marked City’s first loss since August, halting a nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s men slipped to fourth place on the table, six points behind leaders Arsenal, while Villa climbed to seventh—just one point adrift of the champions.

Unai Emery’s side looked confident from the start, pressing high and creating danger on the counter. Emiliano Buendia tested City early with an effort that went over, before Tijjani Reijnders came close to giving the visitors the lead in the sixth minute but sent his shot off target.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Buendia’s corner delivery found Cash just outside the box. The defender struck cleanly with his left foot, sending the ball into the bottom right corner beyond a helpless Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Erling Haaland almost levelled moments later, racing through Villa’s defence only to be denied by an alert Emiliano Martinez. Despite losing Buendia to a right-foot injury shortly before the half-hour mark, Villa maintained their attacking intent.

Ollie Watkins’ header from a Lucas Digne corner was blocked, and Morgan Rogers sent another effort wide from a John McGinn cross.

Man City Frustrated as Aston Villa Hold Firm

Manchester City pushed hard after the break but found themselves up against a resolute Villa defence. Around the hour mark, Savinho saw two quick attempts blocked—first by a defender and then by Pau Torres, who cleared from the goal line.

Substitute Jadon Sancho added fresh energy, cutting in from the left and forcing two strong saves from Donnarumma in the 69th minute. Watkins nearly doubled Villa’s lead six minutes later, only for Donnarumma to again come to City’s rescue.

Haaland, who had scored in his last 12 matches for club and country, thought he had equalised near the 90th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up. City’s frustration grew as the final whistle confirmed their third consecutive defeat at Villa Park.

City now turn their focus to the League Cup when they visit Swansea City on Wednesday, while Villa prepare for a tough Premier League fixture away to title-holders Liverpool on Saturday.
