Arthur Mafokate’s Company Awarded R1.8 Million In Arts Funding Despite Past Allegations

Arthur Mafokate, the iconic Kwaito musician and founder of 999 Records, has once again landed in the public spotlight—this time for securing R1.8 million in funding from the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture through his company, Roadshow Marketing.
The grant was announced by Minister Gayton McKenzie under the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) initiative, aimed at revitalising the creative sector. However, Mafokate’s involvement has stirred public backlash due to his controversial past.
Funding Approved “On Merit,” Says Mafokate
Arthur Mafokate has defended the funding process, stating that everything was done by the book.
“We applied through the official department MGE process, met all the stipulated requirements, and were approved on merit,” he explained.

While the department insists the funds were granted in line with standard procedures, critics argue that the decision reflects poorly on transparency in the disbursement of public funds.
Controversial History Resurfaces Amid New Grant
Public frustration is largely tied to Arthur Mafokate’s previous legal entanglements. Although never convicted, he was implicated in the alleged mismanagement of National Lotteries Commission funds, with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) reportedly attaching some of his assets during their probe.
A source familiar with the situation told Sunday World: “We must not forget that Mafokate was previously implicated in the misappropriation of funds, and his assets were even attached by the Special Investigating Unit.
