Suspect Arrested For Smuggling R14M In Illicit Cigarettes At Beitbridge Border

South African Police Services (SAPS) arrested a 44-year-old foreign national on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Beitbridge Port of Entry. The suspect was caught attempting to smuggle illicit cigarettes valued at over R14 million into Zimbabwe.

Concealed Cargo Discovered

The suspect, driving a white truck with a tanker trailer, initially claimed the tanker was empty. However, police grew suspicious and directed the vehicle to the ramp zone for further inspection.

Upon searching, officers uncovered 710 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes concealed inside the tanker. The suspect was unable to provide a credible explanation for the cargo’s origin and was immediately taken into custody.

The truck tanker, valued at an estimated R2.5 million, was also confiscated.

Praises for Law Enforcement After Arrest

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, lauded the officers for their vigilance and swift action.

“This interception sends a strong message to smugglers. Our officers’ dedication continues to disrupt the operations of those profiting from illicit trade,” said Hadebe.

The suspect will appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on charges of smuggling illicit cigarettes. Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to dismantle the networks behind such criminal activities.
