Two Arrested In Limpopo For Possession Of Illegal Explosives

Police in Limpopo have arrested two foreign nationals, aged 35 and 37, for possession of illegal explosives valued at R2 million. The arrest took place on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, in the Makhado policing area, Vhembe District.

Arrest Details

Members of the Vhembe Flying Squad conducted a tactical stop and search on a vehicle traveling on the N1 South, a few kilometers outside Makhado town, heading towards Polokwane.

During the search, four bags containing Super Power 90 Gel Tubes were discovered in the trunk. The driver and passenger were arrested, and the Explosives Unit confirmed that the items were commercial explosives. The vehicle was confiscated as part of the investigation.

Official Statement

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the officers for their vigilance and quick action in addressing the threat posed by the illegal explosives, which could have been used in serious and violent crimes.

Further investigations are underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the explosives. The suspects are expected to appear before the Makhado Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 21 November 2024, on charges of possession of illegal explosives.
