Third Suspect Arrested In Human Trafficking Case Linked To Plumstead Brothel

A 35-year-old woman has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on charges of human trafficking.

The arrest was made by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, along with the National Intervention Unit and Tactical Response Team, on Thursday, April 10.

This development comes after a raid in September 2024, where officials from the Department of Home Affairs and the Hawks visited a suspected brothel in Plumstead, Cape Town.

Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details

During the investigation, a minor female was identified as a victim of trafficking and handed over to social workers for emergency placement.

Two other suspects, Rogers Mubiru (34) and Fatuma Bashiba (38), were arrested between March 12 and 24, 2025, and are currently in custody.

Their bail application has been postponed to April 17, 2025. The latest suspect will join her co-accused in court after her first appearance.

Hawks Activities And Human Trafficking

Major General Mathipa Makgato, Head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, emphasized the organization’s commitment to tackling human trafficking, describing it as “an evil form of modern slavery.”

Makgato praised the investigating team and urged the public to report any suspicions of human trafficking to the Crime Stop hotline or the nearest Hawks office.

He stated that, with an estimated 50 million people trapped in modern slavery globally, there is need to increase the efforts  in combating this scourge.
