Apple TV+ Is Keeping Subscription Price Unchanged In South Africa

Apple has confirmed that the monthly subscription fee for Apple TV+ in South Africa will remain R124.99, despite recent global price increases. A company spokesperson told reporters that South African subscribers will not see any changes to their bills.

This comes after Apple raised the U.S. subscription price of Apple TV+ by 30%, increasing it from $10 (R176) to $13 (R229). The annual plan in the U.S. remains at $99 (R1,741), and pricing for the Apple One bundle has not changed.

Global Streaming Market Sees Rising Prices

Apple’s decision to hold pricing steady in South Africa contrasts with its international strategy and that of competitors like Netflix and Showmax, who have introduced multiple tiers and frequent increases. Unlike its rivals, Apple TV+ continues to offer a single, all-inclusive plan.

Since its launch in 2019, Apple TV+ has grown slowly compared to other streaming platforms, but its reputation for high-quality original content has been a key strength. Just last month, the service received 81 Emmy nominations, with the series Severance picking up 27 for its second season.

Although Apple does not disclose subscriber numbers or direct revenue from TV+, its services division continues to grow. The company recently reported a 13% jump in services revenue to $27.4 billion (R482 billion) last quarter.

Apple TV+ in South Africa: Pricing History and Future Outlook

Apple TV+ officially launched in South Africa on 1 November 2019, with an introductory price of R84.99 per month. The only increase so far came in October 2022, when the fee rose to R124.99 alongside a price adjustment for Apple Music.

At the time, Apple explained the change was due to higher licensing costs, which ensured artists and songwriters would benefit. Regarding TV+, the company said it initially priced the service low because it launched with only a few shows.

Today, Apple TV+ describes itself as “home to an extensive selection of award-winning and broadly acclaimed series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment from the world’s most creative storytellers.”

For South African subscribers, the decision to keep pricing unchanged means continued access to premium Apple content at one of the most competitive rates among global streaming services.
