Apple May Use Google’s Gemini AI To Power The New Generation Siri

Apple is reportedly exploring a partnership with Google to use its Gemini AI model in a revamped version of Siri, according to Bloomberg. Discussions are still in the early stages, with Google training a version of Gemini that could run directly on Apple’s servers.

This move comes after Apple was also said to be considering deals with OpenAI and Anthropic as it works to improve Siri and expand its artificial intelligence ecosystem.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing two potential versions of its new Siri: one powered by its own AI models, internally referred to as Linwood, and another that relies on external technology, code-named Glenwood.

“The company is simultaneously developing two versions of the new Siri: one dubbed Linwood that is powered by its models and another code-named Glenwood that runs on outside technology,” Bloomberg writes.

A final decision has not yet been made. Apple may ultimately choose to rely solely on its in-house models, but the fact that it’s considering outside partnerships highlights the challenges it has faced in developing Apple Intelligence.

Siri’s Delay and Apple’s AI Challenges

Apple rolled out most of its new AI features with iOS 18, but the highly anticipated Siri upgrade — designed to use personal data to perform more advanced tasks — was delayed until 2026. Apple confirmed the setback earlier this year, citing development issues.

The delay led to internal restructuring of AI projects and fueled discussions about bringing in third-party models. With Google’s Gemini already powering similar features on the Pixel 10, Apple may see it as a faster path to delivering on its promises.

By running Gemini on its own servers through Private Cloud Compute, Apple could still maintain its strict focus on security and user privacy. This would also mirror Samsung’s strategy, as Galaxy AI currently blends custom models with Gemini.

If finalised, the deal could see Gemini offered as an alternative to ChatGPT within Apple Intelligence — a feature Apple has yet to roll out despite earlier plans.
