Ten Anti-Gang Officers Denied Bail In Wade Price Killing As Court Sends Them To Different Prisons

Ten of the 11 Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) officers accused of murdering alleged Clever Kidz (CK) gang member Wade Price will remain behind bars over the festive season after the Athlone Magistrate’s Court, Western Cape denied them bail on Tuesday.
Only one officer was granted bail of R1 000 due to health concerns. The remaining 10 will stay in custody until their next court appearance early next year.
AGU Officers Denied Bail in Wade Price Murder Case
The accused officers, whose identities may not be revealed due to a court order, are facing serious charges including kidnapping, torture, assault, defeating the administration of justice and murder.
Price was killed on 4 December following the interrogation of a shooting incident that occurred outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court the previous day. CCTV footage presented to the court allegedly shows Price and three friends entering Manenberg SAPS with the officers.
While three of the men were later released, Price was allegedly taken to a property in Vygekraal Road, where he was unlawfully and intentionally killed.
The officers previously told the court that bandiete had threatened them after recognising them while they were in custody.
IPID Confirms Unnatural Cause of Death
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed the outcome of the bail application, saying only accused number nine was released due to medical issues.
She said: “Only accused number 9 was granted R 1 000 bail due to health challenges.
“Although the officers alleged that Price complained of ear pain and collapsed during interrogation, Ipid’s investigation established that his cause of death was as a result of unnatural causes.

“The nine officers will be detained at the Brandvlei Correctional facility while the female officer will be detained at Worcester Prison until their next court appearance on 29 January 2026.”
The court heard allegations that Price was repeatedly assaulted with unknown objects, tortured and ultimately smothered or choked to death.

Community Divided Over Bail Decision and Prison Placement
The bail ruling has sparked mixed reactions in Manenberg and surrounding communities.
A community worker, who asked not to be named, said they were devastated by the decision:
“They are being treated like low criminals. If a gangster is caught with a gun they don’t even see the inside of a cell or the court and this is someone who killed another person, innocent people.
“These are law abiding citizens, officers with families but a gangster has more rights in this country than the law abiding citizens and SAPS members. That is not on.”
However, a Manenberg resident said while they supported the denial of bail, they questioned why the officers were sent to different correctional facilities.
The resident said: “Why do our people if they kill someone, where do they go they go straight to Pollsmoor. Why do SAPS get such treatment and send them to Brandvlei and Worcester.
“This is a murder case and other things they did to Wade. I’m happy that they are not getting bail but why are other people being sent to Pollsmoor. If I had to kill someone now that’s straight to Pollsmoor.”
The matter returns to court on 29 January 2026.
