Another Survivor Rescued From George Building Collapse

On Saturday, another survivor was extricated from the rubble of the George Building collapse, bringing new hope to the ongoing rescue and recovery operations. The municipality reported that the rescue team was halfway through day five of their efforts at the disaster site in Victoria Street.

The survivor was carefully extracted and then transported to the hospital after receiving stabilization from the on-site medical team. This latest rescue brings the total number of people rescued to 42. Sadly, thirteen individuals have been confirmed dead, while 39 people are still unaccounted for.

The municipality credits the success of the operation to the decision made by the multi-agency command to employ a systematic approach to rescue and recovery.

The joint district operations centre has been diligently adhering to a rigorous double verification protocol when reporting the numbers of individuals rescued and recovered. They have been working closely with recovery teams, hospitals, and forensic services.

In an effort to support the survivors and their families, the municipality is issuing a call for professional psychosocial support practitioners who are proficient in Chewa, Portuguese, and Shona languages. Additionally, there is a need for safety equipment, including helmets, safety goggles, headlamps, and construction gloves.

Donations of these items can be delivered to the GRDM Fire Station located at Pearl Road, Tamsui Industria.

The municipality expresses gratitude to Love George, Gift of the Givers, and the George Alert Team for coordinating the donations with the support of Lions Club, Rotary, various businesses, neighbourhood watches, faith-based organizations, and members of the public.
