Andrea Johnson Questioned Over Controversial CV Reference At Madlanga Inquiry

The head of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) investigating unit, Advocate Andrea Johnson, has been pressed to clarify a reference listed on her CV that became compromised during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The commission is probing allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Johnson appeared before the selection panel on Wednesday as one of three candidates interviewed for the role of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP). Six candidates will be assessed in total as the state prepares for the end of Advocate Shamila Batohi’s term in January.
During the interview, panel chair and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi raised concerns about a reference on Johnson’s CV: suspended Ekurhuleni head of legal, Advocate Kemi Behari.
Reference Under Scrutiny Amid Blue Lights Scandal
Behari was placed on suspension last week over alleged involvement in the metro’s blue lights scandal, as well as accusations of shielding suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi.

The revelation prompted questions about Johnson’s continued listing of Behari as a professional reference despite the serious allegations surfacing against him.
Johnson Says She Removed Reference After Suspension
Johnson explained that Behari had long been listed as a reference on her CV and that their professional contact had diminished well before recent events. She told the panel that she removed his name once she became aware of his suspension, but the documents had already been submitted.
“It had been such an old reference. I think, even if I were to print CVs from prior, him and the other reference had always been there. The suspension happened after the nomination and CV submission.
“But I did tell him I have to remove him, and we also agreed that, given the allegations that are made, given his suspension, although we hadn’t talked for months, we will not be able to talk at all until his issues are resolved.”
