ANC Roadshow To Showcase Service Delivery Gains Ahead Of Local Government Elections

The African National Congress (ANC) has announced plans to embark on a roadshow across metro municipalities to highlight its efforts to improve service delivery ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

The campaign will see party leaders engage directly with communities, presenting progress made in municipalities under ANC leadership as part of its broader election strategy.

This initiative comes as the party intensifies its preparations for the polls, with a clear focus on strengthening its position in key urban centres.

ANC Targets Majority Control In Municipalities

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the party’s campaign would prioritise securing outright majorities rather than forming coalition governments.

He attributed service delivery challenges, particularly in Johannesburg, to coalition governance, arguing that instability has affected performance. The city has had six mayors since the 2021 local government elections.

Mbalula said the ANC does not favour governing in coalitions, citing governance difficulties that arise when multiple parties share control.

He also expressed support for introducing a legislative threshold for smaller parties to enter municipal councils, suggesting it would improve governance stability.

“We have made people in this country with one seat, mayors. Do we have a choice? We don’t, we have to sing along. Even if we know we have capabilities, but for us to govern, we need that person.”

ANC Roadshow To Highlight Service Delivery Interventions

The party said measures implemented to address municipal challenges, including leadership changes such as removing mayors, have already begun yielding results.

The planned roadshow will aim to demonstrate these improvements to voters and reinforce the party’s campaign message.

“Everywhere where you are in charge, people judge you on the standards of what you have done and your good intentions through your manifesto of what you say you can do, and on the basis of that, people make up their mind.”

Mbalula also maintained that Johannesburg functioned effectively under previous ANC administrations led by Parks Tau and Amos Masondo.

Addressing opposition activity, Mbalula dismissed recent efforts by Democratic Alliance federal chairperson Helen Zille to spotlight service delivery issues in Johannesburg through social media content.

He described the videos as a public relations exercise rather than a substantive electoral campaign, indicating the ANC remains focused on its own voter outreach strategy.
