Analyst Breaks Down Mkhwanazi’s Demeanour Before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, made his stance clear before Parliament’s SAPS Ad Hoc Committee, declaring he would not “sit back and allow criminals to put their own government into power.”

His testimony once again demonstrated his uncompromising approach as he tackled tough questions from committee members. The Commissioner’s tone and delivery painted a grim picture of South Africa’s law enforcement challenges and the state of national security.

Political analyst Dr Mpumelelo Mkhabela sat down with eNCA to analyse Mkhwanazi’s appearance before the committee, focusing on everything from his tone to his body language.

Mkhabela observed that Mkhwanazi’s demeanour during this session differed significantly from his previous appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

“Mkhwanazi was facing Madlanga for the first time as an impartial chairperson, whereas the members of Parliament cannot claim impartiality or lack of prior knowledge of what has been discussed,” Mkhabela explained.

According to Mkhabela, Mkhwanazi’s fiery tone reflected his frustration with what he saw as Parliament’s lack of engagement on critical policing issues.

“That is why at some point he was throwing a book at them to say, ‘I have told you, and I expected more engagement, but you did not follow up.’ That is why he is a little bit more aggressive, detailed, and passionate because he is standing his ground,” Mkhabela said.

The police chief’s unwavering stance before Parliament underscores his determination to defend the integrity of law enforcement and his expectations of stronger accountability from lawmakers.
