Alleged Serial Rapist Claims Victim Consented To Sex For R500 And Fake Job Offer

An alleged serial rapist, Sipho Lucas Phiri, claimed in the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday that one of his alleged victims agreed to have sex with him in exchange for R500 and a job offer.

Phiri faces more than 100 sexual offence charges allegedly committed between 2018 and 2023, including rape, kidnapping, pointing a firearm, and forcing someone to witness a sexual act.

The accused is currently testifying before the Pretoria High Court, which is sitting at the Benoni Magistrates Court, about one of 37 alleged victims who say he sexually assaulted them.

Serial Rapist, Phiri Says Woman Agreed to Sex for Cash and Employment

Phiri told the court that he met the woman in Putfontein near a police station while she was hitchhiking to work. Speaking through an interpreter, he said the woman complained about being underpaid and wanted to earn more money.

At the time, Phiri was employed as a security guard at PRASA. He admitted to deceiving the woman by claiming to be a mine supervisor who could secure her a better job.

“I was convincing her to have sexual intercourse with me, I was giving her the impression that I can make her problems go away,” Phiri testified.

He further stated that he offered the woman R500 in exchange for sex and alleged that she consented. However, he admitted he never paid her, claiming a work emergency arose, and said he left her at her workplace.
