All Blacks Edge Springboks At Eden Park To Stay Top Of Rugby Championship

The All Blacks claimed a hard-fought 24-17 victory over the Springboks in Auckland on Saturday, extending their Eden Park dominance to an incredible 51 matches. Despite South Africa enjoying more territory and possession, New Zealand’s early tries and Ardie Savea’s heroic turnover in the dying minutes proved decisive.

Savea, playing his 100th Test, described the win as “a gutsy performance” under intense national pressure following last month’s shock defeat to Argentina.

“As a player, you thrive on pressure and it makes you want to do better, and that’s what the people of this nation deserve,” he said.

Springboks Struggle With Costly Errors

The Springboks entered the contest desperate to break New Zealand’s three-decade dominance at Eden Park but were undone by a slew of handling errors. While South Africa crossed for two tries to the All Blacks’ three, their mistakes proved costly.

Captain Jesse Kriel admitted his side “weren’t up to scratch tonight” but credited the All Blacks for rising to the occasion. “Full credit to New Zealand, I thought they were really good and it was a special way to celebrate an awesome player for them in Ardie,” Kriel said.

Hooker Malcolm Marx and scrum-half Cobus Reinach were South Africa’s try-scorers, while Handre Pollard added points from the tee.

The result halted a four-match losing streak against the Springboks and kept the All Blacks top of the Rugby Championship standings after three rounds, narrowly ahead of Australia.

Tries from Emoni Narawa and Will Jordan gave New Zealand a flying start, before Quinn Tupaea capitalised on a yellow card against Kwagga Smith to cross the line. Replacement Damian McKenzie also added points from the boot.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus said his team must raise their standards before the two sides meet again in Wellington next week. “I think it was two teams that were desperate to win,” Erasmus admitted. “Not that that was any consolation… they were much better.”
