AK-47 Used In DJ Sumbody’s Murder Linked To Three More Killings, Including DJ Vintos

The AK-47 rifle used in the brutal killing of beloved musician DJ Sumbody has now been forensically linked to three additional murders, including that of Soweto DJ Hector “DJ Vintos” Buthelezi.

This was confirmed by the South African Police Service (SAPS), marking a significant breakthrough in a series of interconnected homicide cases.

The four men accused of DJ Sumbody’s murder—businessman Katiso Molefe, ex-police officer Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana—appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

While originally arrested for the assassination of DJ Sumbody, three of the suspects now also face charges for the murder of Don Tindleni.

All four are formally charged in the murder of DJ Vintos, who was shot outside a nightclub in Orlando East, Soweto, in March 2022.

Police Reveal Critical Forensic Links

Speaking outside the courtroom, SAPS national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the suspects were travelling in a BMW X3 at the time of one of the shootings. She also detailed the expanded scope of the investigation:

“In relation to the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, working closely with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, has brought two additional cases against the four accused who were previously arrested in connection with the Aman Sefoka (DJ Sumbody) case and the killings of his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Khumalo and Sandile Lemeza,” said Mathe.

The single AK-47 rifle has now been tied to: DJ Sumbody’s murder in November 2022, along with his two bodyguards, DJ Vintos’ shooting in March 2022, The murder of Don Tindleni in March 2023 on the N1 freeway, and the Aman Sefoka case.

“What is significant is that one AK-47 has been definitively connected to all four murder scenes,” Mathe stressed. “Beyond ballistic links, there is also overwhelming additional evidence that has been pieced together by our investigators.”

More Arrests Likely as Investigation Expands

According to police, further developments are expected. Investigators are analysing additional weapons seized during the arrests, checking for possible links to up to ten other high-profile murder cases.

“We are now sitting at number four, with ballistics confirming positive matches. We anticipate further arrests as the investigations continue,” said Mathe.

Molefe is set to return to court on August 6 for a formal bail hearing, while the three co-accused have opted not to apply for bail.
